FF Schmalhans started out as a few characters drawn in the 1970s for use on flyers and record sleeves. In 1996 the current family took shape with six weights and a lowercase, along with a few special icons and some new numerals. The term “Schmalhans” is taken from a German saying, “Schmalhans ist Küchenmeister”, or “Skinny Hans is boss of the kitchen” – used when food is scarce.
