FF Moonbase Alpha is one of four fonts in the “FF FUSE Classics” package. This is a small collection of some of the most interesting designs from the first years of the FUSE project, including FF Moonbase Alpha, FF Scratched Out, FF Stealth and FF You Can Read Me. For this FontFont release, the designers were asked to revisit their original fonts and complete the designs.
Cornel Windlin designed FF Moonbase Alpha in 1991 for FUSE 3, whose theme was “disinformation.” It was the first time that Windlin had used font-generating software – FontStudio and Fontographer, in this case. FF Moonbase Alpha was based on an accident, a pixelated printout of Akzidenz Grotesk that had been set at 4 point. ATM (Adobe Type Manager) had not been installed on the Mac, and the Stylewriter printed what was on the screen. The result was an array of pixels, with little resemblance at all to Akzidenz Grotesk. Windlin liked what he saw, so he cleaned the bitmap-appearance up, restructured and redesigned it a bit, and fed it back into the Mac. Voilà! FF Moonbase Alpha was born.
