FF Kosmik is a two weight design from Erik van Blokland. Instead of offering a broad range of styles, FF Kosmik goes deep into the two weights that it has. The design includes a randomizing element, which abides by certain rules: each letter is selected from three alternate forms, ensuring that no three characters in a row are ever exactly the same. Van Blokland has called FF Kosmik a “flipperfont.” It gives the impression of flexibility, not unlike what is expressed in handwriting. With the help of OpenType layout features, users can implement all three variants in succession, over and over, at a rhythm of 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3, etc. (typography to waltz time!). The result is a lively appearance that – in contrast to true random selection – ensures that color separations of FF Kosmik will not develop a mind of their own, but rather can easily be identically reproduced at any time.
