Display typefaces are intended for typesetting at larger sizes, usually 14 points and above. They have four main functions: attract attention, create differentiation, set a mood and build hierarchy.
Script typefaces are perhaps the most expressive of all letter styles, scripts can project a mood, create a sense of the era in which they were first written, and reflect the tools used to create them.
The first Latin font without serifs was a cap-only design released in 1816, under the name “Egyptian”. In the early 20th century, type foundries all over the world began making a new generation of sans serif fonts available for advertising and jobbing work.
Handwritten fonts are less sophisticated than formal scripts. They differ from most scripts in that their characters are not made from flowing brush or pen strokes. They can be ideal for small blocks of words in a variety of situations. Whether on a page, a sign, a banner or a screen, the copy seems personal.
The Roman capital letters grew out of signage. They are the formal letterforms that were carved into monuments, buildings, and used for important manuscripts. Even though these letters were carved in stone, they reflect the characteristics of handwriting with flat-tipped utensils: curved strokes, thick and thin graduations and appendages that we now call “serifs”.
